Budget airline scraps stealth charge – good news?
We at Excite Money have royally railed against stealth charges imposed by budget airlines for the use of debit or credit cards. And now after relentless pressure it seems Monarch airlines have relented by scrapping its charge for debit cards.
The move is intended, according to Monarch chief Conrad Clifford, to ‘ensure upfront, transparent and simple’ charges. ‘In these difficult economic times, there is absolutely no justification in advertising one fare and then stinging consumers with hidden charges.’
Well said that man! Oh, but wait a minute. It turns out that those paying by credit card will have to make up the difference. Their £5.49 charge will rise to a flat tenner. Nice going Mr Monarch.
