Despite the reservations we all have when it comes to paying our car insurance premiums each year, it's fairly certain that we can all agree how important it is that it remains compulsory. A country where the majority of drivers had no insurance would be pure anarchy. Unfortunately that doesn't take the sting out of the tail of paying over your hard earned cash to insure yourself.
And if you think you have it bad, you should try walking (or should that be driving?) a mile in the shows of an 18-year-old male. Finding car insurance for 18 year old guys is no easy task, and it's understandable why.
A sizeable percentage of motor accidents each year involve, or are caused by, young males. While it would be unfair to tar them all with the same brush, it's unavoidable that insurance companies charge far more to such a high risk demographic.
There are some options available for responsible young drivers who want to reduce their premiums however. Many insurance companies offer advanced driving courses, or private driving tests to assess how good the driver is, before offering a reduced rate that is indicative of his ability and confidence on the road.
While most 18-year-old guys would be less than happy with having to spend even more money on such a course, it can make a huge difference to the bottom line - plus it'll ensure that they pay less in future too.
Another option is to have the car's top speed restricted. Many insurers will offer discounts based on reduced engine power, although the savings won't be quite as impressive as they would be from an additional driving course.
Finally, there is the option to restrict driving by mileage or to daylight hours for a year or two. Since fewer miles driven means less time spent on the road, and the fact that most accidents take place during the dark hours, it makes sense for insurers to drop the premium for drivers willing to agree to these restrictions.
