Getting good home insurance from the cheapest insurer

When looking around for good home insurance the cheapest insurer is often the most attractive. However, you do have to be careful that the less expensive policies still offer you the cover you need.

Many of the larger insurance companies do not offer very basic home insurance anymore because it is so limited. However, it is still possible possible to find this type of home insurance from the cheapest companies. This type of insurance usually covers water damage, but only from your home's own heating and water system. Volcanic and hurricane disruption and minor coverage of household items, usually up to the value of £5,000. They do not cover valuables as a separate entity and you will have little insurance for things such as damage to your roof, broken windows and any other accidental damage situation.

Low premiums start at a couple of pounds a month, and for this you receive the very basic cover. However, it is worth bearing in mind that should a situation arise that isn't covered, you must be prepared to foot the bill. For example, if you lose some roof tiles due to high winds and they fall and damage someone else's car, you will need to pay for repairs to your roof as well as the person's car. While it may make financial sense to buy home insurance from the cheapest insurance company to keep monthly payments down, it could end up costing you a whole lot more in the long run.

Of course, not all home insurance from the cheapest company is pointless, if you are a skilled tradesman with very little valuable items, you may decide it is cheaper for you to go with basic cover. You can also consider buying the cheaper cover and adding what you want to it as you need it, such as accidental and weather damage in the winter months when the weather is likely to be bad.
