A Quick Guide to Low Income Grants

The United Kingdom has various low income grants in place to help those who may be struggling to pay for the essentials due to unemployment or living on a low income. Each grant has different criteria, and not everyone will qualify for each type of grant available. In order to get a good idea of what you may be able to claim, it is always worth talking to an advisor at your local Jobcentre Plus. They are trained to help individuals gain access to grants that will suit their specific needs.

One of the most popular low income grants is the Council Tax Benefit. This provides help to people who are unemployed or on a low income and who need help paying their council tax bill. In order to qualify your income must be below a certain level set by the council. People who employed and own their own home can qualify for this grant if their income is low enough.

During the harsh weather of winter, a person's heating costs can mount up and leave them with a bill they are unable to pay. The Cold Weather grant is based on seven-day periods of cold weather between the dates of November 1 and March 31 each year. This is one of several low income grants relating to heating, and if you receive certain government benefits, you will automatically qualify.

A budgeting loan is designed to help people buy essentials they may not be able to afford themselves. This interest-free loan does have to be paid back but at an amount suitable to the borrower's circumstances. People on income support and income-related benefits can all apply for the loan.
