Maternity leave numbers soar

Good news for all the unborn little kiddos out there – the amount of mums opting to take full maternity leave from work has doubled since 2006.

The average amount of maternity cover taken is currently around nine months, compared with three and a half months only five years ago.

The study, by savings bank ING Direct, found that a third of the 4000 expectant mothers surveyed said that they didn’t enjoy work enough to return early, while many said that they were not prepared to sacrifice time spent with their new child.

ING Direct chief executive Richard Doe said: ‘It is clear parents are prioritising taking quality time with their kids and are prepared to make sacrifices to cover the cost of this.’
