Mobile phone providers will be forced to offer 12 month contracts new EU rules stipulate.
Customers who want the latest mobile phone are often locked into contracts of 18 or even 24 months. If customers want to leave their contracts, they are forced to pay the remainder of the deal – often more than £1,000.
Price comparison website Top10.com lists only 139 deals on 12 month mobile contracts, in comparison with 95,000 contracts lasting 24 months and over 64,000 deals on 18 month contracts.
The new proposals will oblige all providers to offer 12-month contracts on all mobiles. But there are unlikely to be any guidelines on how much providers can charge – so a 12 month contract might end up even more costly.
