Using tablet computers while abroad can be 1000 times more expensive than it costs in the UK, according to consumer watchdog Which?
Checking emails, downloading music and watching videos is relatively cheap within the UK, costing on average £7.50 a month for a gigabyte of data. But abroad, and particularly outside th EU, users could easily run up bills of several thousand pounds for the equivalent usage.
Which? Head Peter Vicary-Smith told The Telegraph: ‘The cost of using a mobile in the EU has dropped significantly in recent years, but travel further afield and you could be facing a huge bill for making a few calls to stay in touch with friends and family.
‘If you're a frequent traveller, you may be able to save money by buying an upgrade from your operator that offers reduced international call costs, or if you spend a lot of time in one country, it may be worth getting a local pay-as-you-go sim card.
‘Until data costs come down, anyone considering their tablet or mobile for using the net abroad should steer well clear of 3G data roaming and use free wi-fi access where available instead.’
