Retailers help us make energy savings
Buying household appliances isn’t just a case of comparing how one hulk of white plastic looks to another. Energy efficient ratings and all sorts of other information need to be taken in before we make our choice.
And now, to add to the wealth of complex information we’re given, shops will have to show us how much it will cost to run the fridge or washing machine. An annual electricity cost will be displayed on the price tag.
So now you wil be able to weigh up how much buying a cheaper machine will cost you in the longer term and see if it’s worth buying a more expensive machine that’ s energy efficient if that extra cost will take years to make up.
It’s a good idea, and something car retailers have had to do for years – displaying the average fuel consumption. Perhaps it will lead to us making more informed decisions and be less attracted by looks and general shininess.
