Looking for finance from the Students Loan Company?

Every year thousands of students from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are granted loans from the Students Loan Company to help them through their studies.

There are a number of requirements that must be met to be eligible for finance from the Student Loans Company.

Where you live

The day your course starts you must be a UK citizen, or have 'settled status' in the country, as laid out under the terms of the Immigration Act 1971.

Additionally, you must be 'ordinarily resident' in the UK, or have been 'ordinarily resident' in the UK for the 3 years preceding the start of your course.


Where you study must satisfy the following criteria

  • UK degree-awarding institution
  • College that receives government funding and provides a course leading to a degree qualification
  • Private institution offering specifically designated higher education courses
  • Group of schools taking part in the School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) scheme

Course requirements

  • First degree, such as a Bachelor of Arts, Science or Education
  • Foundation Degree
  • Certificate of Higher Education
  • Diploma of Higher Education
  • Higher National Certificate
  • Higher National Diploma

Previous studies

Loans are generally only granted to students who are in their first higher education course. However, you can also avail of financial assistance from the Student Loans Company if you're pursuing a higher ranking course after completing a lower third level course.


Unfortunately, anyone over 60 years of age isn't eligible to apply for loans from the Student Loans Company. However, if you're over 60, you can still apply for grants and the Tuition Fee Loan.
