Thrifty Britons seek out bargains

UK shoppers are increasingly taking advantage of deals, discounts and money-off vouchers as the economic crisis bites away at our finances, a new report reveals.

Halifax Home Insurance asked 2000 adults and found that nine out of ten were on the hunt for bargains and were frequent users of vouchers. One on ten admitted to being quite annoyed if their partner paid the full whack for goods or services, and many seek to haggle over prices. Deals on meals in restaurants and takeaways were the discount seekers' main targets, followed by holidays and flights.

Lindsay Forster, director of Halifax Home Insurance, said: 'The recent downturn has made us more careful about what we spend and more savvy in searching for savings and getting a good deal matters.

'People now quite rightly expect a good deal and feel comfortable shopping and even bartering to make sure they get the best price whether for a meal, a flight or even insurance.'

Almost everyone contacted by the survey said that they were not at all embarrassed to use discounts or vouchers, with over half sharing these with friends or family.
