Is it possible to become obssessed by bins? It seems so, judging by the latest move by Councils to fine householders a staggering £110 for leaving your wheelie out more than 12 hours at a time.
The new measure is part of Durham County Council’s war against bin abusers. Already you can be fined for leaving an extra bag or overfilling your bin. While the price of landfill can be sited as the cause of these fines, the new Durham fine smacks of squeezing yet more money out of citizens.
It begs the question what next? Authorities seem to want monitor exactly what we place in bins, impose fines for putting the wrong things in the wrong bin and control where we put our bins and more.
